Canary endemic
Northeast of Tenerife, and North, Center, West and South of Gran Canaria.
It can be found in some of the permanent fresh and temperate water courses that exist in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. However, it seems to be more frequent in ravines of both high and low areas, especially in isolated, sunny and more or less eutrophied pools. (Verdú et al., 2011)
In the census carried out in 2002, 59 horses were counted in Tenerife. (Vice-Ministry of the Environment, 2009)
