Cosmopolitan species of tropical and subtropical waters. In the Pacific it reaches the coasts of Alaska, while in the Atlantic it is found from the British Isles to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, reaching 40º S latitude.
Ocean and Coast of the Southwest and West of Tenerife and Southwest of Gran Canaria.
Of mainly littoral habitat, where it feeds, once adult, phanerogams and algae. Its distribution area coincides with that of the meadows and algae from which it feeds, and generally does not exceed 40-50 m in depth. Occasionally it can be observed in the open sea. (Pleguezuelos et al., 2002)
