Canary Islands and Madeira. From Western Europe to India (79º 40'E), also in North Africa and Turkey. In Europe from Scotland, southern Sweden and Latvia to the Mediterranean countries.

Distribution in the Canary Islands

Northeast and East of La Palma and practically the whole island of Tenerife.

Habitat

Species of eminently forest habits, although in the Canary Islands it does not have such strict forest requirements, being located in rural areas of medium altitude, laurisilva, pine forests and high mountain. It takes refuge mainly in nest boxes and buildings. (Palomo et al., 2007)
