Canary Islands and Madeira. Much of Eurasia and Africa.
Virtually the entire island of El Hierro, Southeast and West of La Palma, practically the entire island of La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria (except Southwest coast), Fuerteventura (including Lobos), Lanzarote and Chinijo archipelago (Roque del Este, Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza).
It is a species of more or less desert environments and growing areas. In general, it avoids forests, but occasionally it can be seen in small clearings or tracks inside pine forests. On the higher islands it reaches the high mountain scrub, where it probably does not breed. It nests in holes or cavities in walls, ravine walls, abandoned houses, among rocks, and even between roots or in the trunk of trees. It is a partially migratory species, making movements of some importance in the interior of the islands. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
In 2000 the population was estimated between 3,000 and 3,500 couples. (Vice-Ministry of the Environment, 2004)
