Canary endemic

Distribution in the Canary Islands

Almost the whole island of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera (except East), Tenerife and Gran Canaria (except Southeast and Southwest).

Origin

Habitat

It occupies practically all the habitats of the archipelago, although it has preferences for the zones of lower altitude, including urban nuclei. It lives in the pine forests as well as in the monteverde, but in this last formation it is quite scarce, as in the high mountain scrub. The nesting sites are very varied, using small caves and crevices in walls of ravines and cliffs, in the interior of cacti and brambles, in burrows of rabbits, in old nests of ravens and sparrow hawks, and in trees. After breeding, family groups move away from the breeding place. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
