Canary endemic
Practically the whole island of Fuerteventura (including Lobos), the whole island of Lanzarote, and the Chinijo archipelago (Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Alegranza and Roque del Este).
It inhabits open environments dominated by formations of tabaibal-cardonal, especially rocky plains, sand jables, edges of badlands, crops, and unproductive and broken land. It also frequents open areas of pine forest, especially on the island of El Hierro. The nest is a soft depression in the ground and is usually located next to some scrub or stone. Possibly the Canarian populations are sedentary. Outside the breeding season is a gregarious species, forming large groups that usually visit the same places on a regular basis. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
The population is estimated at less than 1,000 couples (Madroño et al., 2004)
