Worldwide distribution

Canary Islands. From Northwest India and Afghanistan to Arabia and the northern half of Africa.

Distribution in the Canary Islands

Northwest and South of Tenerife, practically the whole island of Fuerteventura (including Lobos), the whole island of Lanzarote (except the North), and the Chinijo archipelago (Alegranza and Graciosa). Doubtful presence for Gran Canaria.

Origin

Habitat

It is a species of arid open environments, occupying earthy-stony plains, sand jables, fields of abandoned crops, etc. In general it lives in areas where the vegetation is low and very scarce, being present even in stony areas practically devoid of vegetation. The nest is simply a slight depression in the ground. It is possible that birds may leave any of the islands of origin after the breeding period. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)

Population data

The 2001 data estimated the population between 400 and 500 copies. (Vice-Ministry of the Environment, 2004)
