Distribution in the Canary Islands

Practically all the islands of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura (including Lobos), Lanzarote, and the Chinijo archipelago (Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Alegranza and Roque del Este).

Origin

Habitat

It nests both on the coast and inland, often in inaccessible places, and visits the colonies at night. After the reproduction it leaves the waters of the archipelago, migrating mainly to the South American coasts of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Non-breeding birds are dispersed throughout the Atlantic, from the Bay of Biscay and Great Britain to the eastern shores of the Americas. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)

Population data

At the end of 1980 its population was estimated in an approximate way in 30,000 couples (Madroño et al., 2004)
