Canary endemic
Virtually the entire island of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura (including Lobos), Lanzarote and the Chinijo archipelago (Roque del Este, Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza).
It occupies a great variety of habitats, nesting from the coast to the high mountain scrub. They frequent garbage dumps and recreational areas. The nest, voluminous and with quite thick branches, is usually located at very variable heights in cliffs, cliffs or cliff walls, taking advantage of some small cave or crevice. Exceptionally it can breed in trees and even in power line turrets. After the reproduction they usually make displacements of certain importance, even allowing inter-island movements to take place. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
In the census conducted in 2009, 47 pairs were counted: 10 in Gran Canaria. 12 in Tenerife, 17 in La Palma and 8 in La Gomera. (Siverio, M., 2009)
