Canary endemic
West, Northeast and South of Tenerife, Northwest, North, Northeast, East and South of Gran Canaria, practically the whole island of Fuerteventura (including Lobos), Lanzarote and the Chinijo archipelago (Roque del Este, Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza).
It is a typical species of open environments, with two distinct types of habitat, one arid typical of the eastern islands and the southern half of the central islands, and another, humid, exclusive of certain localities of the north of Gran Canaria and Tenerife In general it inhabits stony plains, sandy shrubs, cultivated areas, and edges of badlands, requiring some vegetation cover, either of herbaceous or of cultivated species. The nest is built on the ground, protected between plants and more rarely next to a stone. It is a gregarious species, forming numerous flocks that fly daily between feeding areas and roosts. The existence of movements between islands is likely. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
