Species with very fragmented distribution from the Iberian Peninsula to western China, and northern Africa.
Southwest of Tenerife, South and Southeast of Gran Canaria, and Center of Fuerteventura.
It usually locates the nest near the water, being a platform hidden among the vegetation; sometimes they place it in artificial places like hedges, dykes, etc. They move between the main wetlands of Fuerteventura, and they may leave the island. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
According to the censuses conducted in 2014, the species did not nest in the Canary Islands in that year. In the period 2002-2014, 3 specimens were observed in Tenerife, 1 in Gran Canaria, and 7 in Fuerteventura. (Lorenzo et al., 2014)
