Canaries, Azores, Madeira and Savages. Europe, the Middle East, Black Sea and Caspian to the Yenisei Valley, a few areas of Africa (Senegal, Mauritania and Tunisia), North America and the Caribbean.
Coastal areas of almost the entire island of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife (except East coast), Gran Canaria (except East coast) and Fuerteventura (except West coast).
The nests are very rudimentary, using shallow depressions in the ground. Normally it takes place on rocks or coasts more or less isolated and inaccessible by land. Exceptionally they come to breed in anchored fishing boats. During the breeding season they make movements of several kilometers towards feeding areas. After the reproduction they leave the archipelago possibly to winter in the African coasts. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
In the census conducted in 2007 the population was estimated between 18 and 25 couples: 5 in Gran Canaria, between 8 and 10 in Tenerife, between 2 and 4 in La Gomera and between 3 and 6 in El Hierro. (Díaz-Bertrana, M. et al., 2009)
