Worldwide distribution

Canary endemic

Distribution in the Canary Islands

Northeast of Tenerife (Roque de Fuera).

Origin

Habitat

It inhabits practically all habitats, although its populations are scarce in the laurel forests where it is only present on the margins of forest tracks. In pine forests, their populations are scarce, although the density of them varies according to the degree of tree cover. It shows preference for rocky habitats, and its populations are exceptionally abundant in the stone walls built by man in agricultural areas. Frequently it digs huras in the base of the shrubs, especially in xeric or little stony habitats. (Pleguezuelos et al., 2002)

Population data

In the census conducted in 2003, the population was estimated at 350 individuals. (Vice-Ministry of the Environment, 2003)
