It is found in the temperate and cold waters of all the great oceans. The populations of the two hemispheres are independent.

Habitat

It is an essentially oceanic species, although it can approach the mainland in search of food if the coast is abrupt. Performs seasonal migrations, occupying low latitudes during the winter months and high in summer. (Blanco & González, 2006)
