Palearctic and Ethiopian, it extends from North Africa to South Africa along the East Coast, and from the Near East, Caucasus and Arabian Peninsula to Uzbekistan, Kashmir and the Chinese Turkestan. In Europe it is widely distributed in the Mediterranean area. Its northern limit is located in Normandy (some wandering specimens reach the British Isles), extreme south-western Germany, Austria, Hungary and southern Bulgaria; it is found in practically all of the islands of the Mediterranean.
Central and Southeast of Tenerife, Central and Northeast of Gran Canaria, practically the whole island of Fuerteventura (except North coast) and Northeast of Lanzarote.
It takes refuge both in cracks of rocks and trees, and can be found in both natural and humanized environments. It prefers open areas such as fields and water courses, although generally not far from the arboreal vegetation. It has adapted to hunting in lampposts, often in groups, and possibly these are today one of their most important hunting places. (Palomo et al., 2007)
