Canaries and Azores. Eurasia and some areas of North Africa.
West, North, East and South of La Gomera, practically the whole island of Tenerife (except central zone), West, Center, Northeast, East and South of Gran Canaria, Center of Fuerteventura. Doubtful presence in La Palma.
Inhabits ponds and dams with open water where you can dive, avoiding places with great development of vegetation. The nests are floating accumulations of branches and algae, placing them several meters from the shore, sometimes they place them on land. The breeding population is basically sedentary, although it can perform dispersive movements. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
In 2003-2004 the nesting population was estimated between 50 and 250 pairs. (Vice-Ministry of the Environment, 2009)
