Canary endemic
Virtually the entire island of El Hierro, Central West and North of La Palma, South of La Gomera, the whole island of Tenerife (except the North and the Center of the island), and the whole island of Gran Canaria (except the Center) .
It inhabits open environments dominated by formations of tabaibal-cardonal, especially rocky plains, sand jables, edges of badlands, crops, and unproductive and broken land. It also frequents open areas of pine forest, especially on the island of El Hierro. The nest is a soft depression in the ground and is usually located next to some scrub or stone. Possibly the Canarian populations are sedentary. Outside the breeding season is a gregarious species, forming large groups that usually visit the same places on a regular basis. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
The data available in 2004 estimated the population between 556 and 596 breeding individuals. (Vice-Ministry of the Environment, 2004)
