Europe, much of Asia and North West Africa.
South, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast of Tenerife, North, Northeast, Northwest, Center, South and Southeast of Gran Canaria, Center, Southeast, East, West and Northwest of Fuerteventura.
It occupies several ponds and dams with soft margins and muddy banks and ravines with more or less permanent water. It is common for some pairs to nest in the puddles in the mouths of these ravines. The nest is a simple depression in the ground covered with abundant pebbles. They usually locate it on boards and plains near the ponds, although it is sometimes located on the same retaining wall. A part of the nesting population leaves the breeding grounds during the summer period due to the decrease in water level and human annoyance. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
In the census conducted in 2009, the population was estimated at 72 couples. (Siverio, M., 2009)
