Canary Endemism. Although some specimens of this subspecies have been collected in northwest Africa.
Center and West Coast, Southwest, South, Southeast and East of La Gomera, South Coast, Southwest, Southeast, East and Northeast of Tenerife, practically the entire coast of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura (including Lobos), Lanzarote and the Chinijo archipelago (Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Alegranza and Roque del Este).
The species is typical of arid areas, especially rocky sites, ravines, hillsides, and abandoned crops. It can also penetrate into badlands and even sandy areas. The nests are usually quite hidden in walls, under rocks, in the ground covered by some plant, and even in abandoned houses. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)
In the year 2000 the population was estimated between 4,000 and 5,000 couples. (Madroño et al., 2004)
