From the eastern end of Europe to Asia and northwest Africa.

Distribution in the Canary Islands

South and East of Tenerife, Northwest, East and Southeast of Gran Canaria, practically the whole island of Fuerteventura, and Southwest, Southeast and East of Lanzarote.

Origin

Habitat

The nest can be located between bushes at a distance from the water. He is a recent colonizer, probably native of Africa, where he frequently makes important trips. Possibly migrates between the main wetlands of the island, especially in summer. (Martín & Lorenzo, 2001)

Population data

In the census conducted in 2014, there were 9 adults, 4 couples, 32 chickens and 9 juveniles in Lanzarote; in Fuerteventura between 153 and 299 adults, between 36 and 40 couples, 32 couples with chickens, 258 chickens and 145 juveniles; in Gran Canaria 4 adults, 2 couples, 19 chickens and 7 juveniles and in Tenerife 3 adults. (Lorenzo et al., 2014)
