Worldwide distribution

Canary endemic

Distribution in the Canary Islands

Virtually the whole island of Gran Canaria, East of Fuerteventura. Extinct in the Northeast of Tenerife.

Origin

Habitat

In Gran Canaria, its distribution extends throughout the island, from low altitude areas associated with cardonal-tabaibal and thermophilic forest to the summit. Its distribution covers almost all the habitats of the island, although it does not abound in the pine forests of the Canary Islands, where it is usually restricted to forest clearings. It is also present on the Island of La Palma and in Fuerteventura associated with agricultural areas and small ravines, as a result of recent introductions. (Pleguezuelos et al., 2002)

Population data

It can reach 1,000 individuals per hectare. (Pleguezuelos et al., 2002)
