CENTINELA is a data bank of the protected species of the Canary archipelago, of free and free access, launched in 2017 by the Government of the Canary Islands. It is integrated into the Bank of the Canary Islands Natural Inventory (BIOCAN), a platform that favors the interoperability of the different databases promoted by the Canary Islands Government regarding biodiversity. CENTINELA aims to disseminate and disseminate among the Administrations, interested social agents and citizens in general, relevant aspects for the conservation of these species, thus contributing to a more effective management and protection of the rich natural heritage of the Canary Islands. All this, in accordance with the Law 27/2006 of July 18, which regulates the rights of access to information on public participation and access to justice in environmental matters.

CENTINELA provides technical and administrative information on the protected species of the Canarian archipelago, in accordance with the sectoral regulations that apply. It includes relevant technical information on the taxonomy and systematics of these species, their distribution, the size of the populations and their evolution, as well as documentation on conservation plans, monitoring programs, studies, technical assessments of their conservation status, etc.

CENTINELA is developed as a module linked to the Biodiversity Data Bank of the Canary Islands, with specific information for protected species, so that both databases operate in a linked manner, sharing information and resources, as the aforementioned Data Bank is constituted as a public register of an administrative nature through Law 4/2010, of the Canary Islands Catalog of Protected Species.

CENTINELA has been financed through European Union funds under the operational program of the Canary Islands for the application of the European Regional Development Fund -PO FEDER Canarias 2014-2020-, line of action promoted in line with the Biodiversity Strategy for 2020 of the European Union. Specifically, it is developed in the context of the project Preparation of studies, reports, plans and development of nature conservation measures included in the Thematic Objective 6 " Protect the environment and promote the resource efficiency " , and Investment Priority 6.d " protection and restoration of biodiversity and soil and the promotion of ecosystem services, including through Natura 2000 and infrastructure ecological ".
